What’s the Difference Between SMD, COB, and Micro LED?

When selecting an LED display, the type of LED packaging technology plays a critical role in the display’s performance, durability, and cost. The three main types used in modern LED displays are SMD (Surface-Mounted Device), COB (Chip-on-Board), and the newer Micro LED technology.

SMD (Surface-Mounted Device)

Structure: Three separate RGB diodes are mounted on the surface of the PCB.

Advantages: Widely used, cost-effective, good color performance.

Common Use: Indoor and outdoor LED displays, rental screens.

Downside: Vulnerable to damage from moisture or impact.

COB (Chip on Board)

Structure: Multiple LED chips are directly mounted on the board and encapsulated together.

Advantages: Better protection, anti-collision, moisture-resistant, seamless surface.

Common Use: High-end indoor displays, control rooms, harsh environments.

Downside: Slightly higher cost, limited pixel pitch range.

Micro LED

Structure: Ultra-small LEDs (micron scale) that function as individual pixels, directly embedded on the substrate.

Advantages: Highest brightness, contrast, and color accuracy; ultra-fine pixel pitch.

Common Use: Luxury applications like control centers, broadcasting, and future consumer TVs.

Downside: High cost, still an emerging technology.
